How Online Tutoring Actually Works When Done Well

When schools closed for in-person instruction in 2020, educators and students were suddenly pushed into online learning. People were scared, frustrated, unprepared, and understandably resistant to teaching and learning through a screen.

Online instruction was thrown together with almost no training and very little time to prepare. Teachers were asked to recreate classrooms overnight. Students were expected to sit in front of screens for hours. Parents were juggling work, childcare, and constant tech issues.

For many families, it felt chaotic and overwhelming. So it makes sense that many people came out of that experience saying, “Never again.”

But what happened in 2020 was not true online instruction. It was emergency remote learning. And those two things are very different.

Several years later, online learning has become normalized. In some fields, especially tutoring, it has become more common than in-person instruction. And it looks nothing like what families experienced during school closures.

High-quality online tutoring is intentional. It is structured. And it is designed around how children actually learn.

One of the biggest misconceptions about online tutoring is that strong relationships cannot be built through a screen. In reality, meaningful connections between tutor and student can absolutely form in a virtual setting.

Because tutoring is one-on-one, students receive focused attention and consistent interaction. Over time, trust builds. Students feel seen, supported, and understood. This relationship is especially important for students with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and other learning differences, who often need a calm, predictable learning environment in order to thrive.

Another major benefit of online tutoring is flexibility.

Families today are busy. Children are balancing school, sports, speech therapy, homework, playtime, and family commitments. Adding tutoring on top of that can feel overwhelming, especially when it requires travel and rigid scheduling.

Online tutoring allows short, focused sessions to fit into real life. A 30-minute reading session can happen without sacrificing sports, family time, or a child’s energy at the end of a long day. Removing the commute removes a major barrier to consistency.

The learning environment itself also plays a powerful role in student success.

When families create a simple, consistent learning space at home, students often show strong engagement and progress. A quiet area, agreed-upon materials such as paper or a whiteboard, and minimal distractions allow students to focus on learning rather than adjusting to a new environment.

Learning at home can feel safer and more comfortable for many children. Being in familiar surroundings helps reduce anxiety and allows students to show up ready to learn. For some children, especially those who struggle in traditional classroom settings, this comfort can make a noticeable difference.

A Note on Screen Time

Many parents are understandably focused on reducing screen time for their children. This concern comes up often, and it is worth addressing directly.

Parents who are mindful of screen time are absolutely right. Too much screen exposure can negatively impact children’s well-being, attention, sleep, and mental health. Unlimited access to YouTube, television, TikTok, and social media has a very different effect on children than most families realize, and in many cases, it does more harm than good.

In an online world, the answer is not eliminating screens altogether. The answer is being intentional.

Parents and educators need to ask a different question: How can screens be used as a tool rather than a detriment?

Families can choose to significantly limit or eliminate unstructured, entertainment-based screen time while still recognizing the value of screens for a clear educational purpose. When screens are used intentionally, with guidance, structure, and boundaries, they can support learning rather than interfere with it.

Purposeful online tutoring is not passive screen time. It is interactive, focused, and guided by a trained adult. When used this way, screens can actually improve students’ learning, confidence, and self-esteem. This is the opposite of the effect seen with unrestricted internet access.

Online tutoring also offers access to digital tools that are often more effective than what is available in a physical classroom.

In the post-COVID world, the development of high-quality, research-based digital tools for reading instruction has accelerated rapidly. Interactive whiteboards, visual supports, targeted practice, and immediate feedback can be integrated seamlessly into online sessions. These tools allow instruction to be tailored to a student’s specific needs in real time.

Another benefit families often overlook is visibility.

Parents can listen in on sessions and see exactly what their child is working on. Instead of relying only on written updates, families can observe progress happening in real time. This insight helps parents better understand how their child is learning and how to support that learning outside of tutoring sessions.

Online tutoring done well is not a compromise. It is not a lesser version of in-person instruction. It is a different model, one that offers flexibility, personalization, and consistency when implemented thoughtfully.

The virtual learning experience of 2020 left a lasting impression on many families, and that response is valid. But it should not define what online tutoring looks like today.

When delivered intentionally, with trained tutors, effective tools, and a supportive home environment, online reading tutoring can be highly effective and, for many students, truly transformative.
